FAQs

EXPERIENCES

When do your experiences take place?

Sessions usually happen mid-morning, with our open-fire lunch around midday. They generally fall on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, but exact days and times vary according to season, weather, and who’s working in the forest that week. We’ll confirm your schedule before arrival so you can plan your trip.

Why isn’t there a fixed timetable for experiences?

Loskin Wood is a working, growing forest, and our programme evolves with the season, the weather, and the team available at any given time. The variation is part of the experience — every stay is different, and you’ll be joining the forest as it develops. This flexibility also ensures that each session is run by the right expert at the best possible time.

Are the experiences included in the price?

Yes, all experiences are fully inclusive. There are no extra charges for woodland tours, craft sessions, open-fire lunch, or guided activities. The programme is part of your stay.

Are the experiences optional?

Yes. Participation in the Loskin Wood programme is completely optional. Some guests love joining every session, while others prefer to spend quiet time in the forest, reading, relaxing, or exploring independently. Either way, your stay is fully inclusive and designed to let you enjoy the forest at your own pace.

How long does a typical session last?

Most woodland craft or guided tours run for one to two hours, usually in the morning. The open fire lunch session takes place over midday and again lasts about two hours. Session lengths may vary slightly depending on the activity and conditions.

Can I choose which experiences to do?

When booking you can let us know what experiences you’d like to do, we will do our best to accommodate but we can’t guarantee you will get the sessions you request.

Are the experiences suitable for all abilities?

All our experiences are designed for adults, and most involve gentle walks, craft activities, or time around the fire. Some sessions may require light walking or standing on uneven forest ground. We’re happy to work with guests to adapt activities where possible. Please get in touch before your stay so we can make arrangements to suit your needs.

What if the weather isn’t good?

Sessions are adapted to suit the weather and season. We provide shelter where needed and may adjust timing or activity type. Rain, sun, frost — the forest offers a different experience every time.

CABINS

What is the difference between the cabins?

Each cabin is made from the species of timber the cabin is named after.

The layout and amenities are generally the same except that the Larch cabin includes a log burning stove and the Douglas Fir cabin welcomes dogs.

What facilities do the cabins include?

Spacious living space with fully equipped kitchen, a separate bedroom which can be made up of either a king bed or two small singles. A modern bathroom with overhead shower. For further details see the Cabin page.

There is a step into the cabin.

MIDGES

Scotland’s west coast is famous for its beautiful scenery and, in the warmer months, infamous for its midges. These tiny flying insects are most active from May to September, especially on calm, damp days at dawn and dusk.

For your comfort we provide midge repellents which can help, and if you are aware of them then we advise you keep all windows and doors closed.

MINIMUM STAY

In 2026, arrivals and departures are Mondays, Wednesday or Fridays:
2 nights minimum (Monday and Wednesday)
 3 nights minimum (Friday arrival)

We’ve set this as the minimum stay to make sure you have the time to truly experience all that Loskin Wood offers, and to make scheduling experiences a little easier for us.

GUIDED TOURS AND ACTIVITIES

These are optional experiences included in the cost of your stay.

Please note these take place outdoors and you should dress appropriately for the weather conditions and with sturdy footwear. We may walk up to a mile during tours. Craft and Dining experiences will take place in an outdoor shelter heated with an open fire.

ADULTS ONLY POLICY

To curate the best possible experience all our cabins will be for adults only.

LOCATION

Please see this page regarding Loskin Wood location.

DOGS AND OTHER PETS

Select cabins are dog friendly (initially Douglas Fir). A small cleaning fee applies, ensuring a fresh welcome for every guest. For everyone’s comfort and for the wood’s wildlife, dogs must be kept on a lead while out and about in Loskin Wood. We ask that only well behaved pets join you for your stay.

For pets other than dogs, please get in touch with us before booking.

A Few Honest Notes

We believe the best stays start with clear expectations.

Loskin has been designed to offer a deep connection to nature and the new woodland while minimising our impact on both the local and global environment. That means there are a few practical realities and compromises that may differ from more conventional accommodation.

Rather than glossing over them, we’ve set them out below. These honest notes are here to help you decide if Loskin is right for you, and to ensure that when you arrive, it’s exactly what you were hoping for.

Neighbouring Cabins

Loskin is designed to feel calm and private, but it’s not completely secluded. The cabins are spaced around 20 metres apart, with planting, terrain and screening used to create privacy as the woodland establishes.

You’re unlikely to see much of your neighbours, but you may occasionally hear everyday sounds: a door closing, quiet voices, or a dog bark. You may also hear distant background noise from time to time, including traffic from the nearby road, particularly when the wind carries sound.

This is the reality of staying in a young woodland close to town rather than a remote wilderness. If you’re comfortable with that balance, most guests will find Loskin feels peaceful without feeling cut off.

Road Noise

The cabins are about 120 metres from the public road, making access convenient with the nearest bus stop just a 3-minute walk away. Before the new woodland grows, you may notice some road noise around the cabins. With doors and windows closed, it is not audible inside.

The external deck is positioned on the opposite side of the cabin to the road, which helps screen sound, especially when there’s a breeze in the prevailing wind direction.

Right to Roam

Scotland has a long-established right to roam, which means people are free to walk, cycle and explore most land responsibly — including woodland like Loskin.

While Loskin is not a public attraction and the cabins are carefully spaced for privacy, it is possible that you may occasionally see walkers passing through the wider woodland. This is usually infrequent and brief, and we manage paths, planting and screening to maintain a strong sense of seclusion around each cabin.

We see this openness as part of living in a real landscape rather than a closed resort. If complete exclusivity and guaranteed solitude are essential for you, Loskin may not be the right fit. If, however, you’re comfortable sharing the woods in a quiet, respectful way, we think you’ll feel very at home here.

Midges

Scotland’s west coast is famous for its beautiful scenery and, in the warmer months, infamous for its midges. These tiny flying insects have an annoying bite and are most active from May to September, especially on calm, damp days at dawn and dusk.

For your comfort we provide midge repellents which can help, and if you are aware of them then we advise you keep all windows and doors closed.

Ticks

Ticks are small, spider-like creatures found in grass and woodland. They don’t jump or fly — they attach when you brush past vegetation. They can be very small: young ticks are about the size of a poppy seed, while adults are closer to a sesame seed.

Ticks are most active from spring to autumn, though they can be active year-round in mild weather. A small proportion carry the bacteria that can cause Lyme disease, but prompt removal greatly reduces the risk.

How to reduce the risk

  • Stick to paths where possible
  • Wear long trousers and closed footwear
  • Use insect repellent
  • Check yourself after time outdoors (especially behind knees, waist, armpits, scalp and behind ears)

If you find a tick
Remove it as soon as possible using a tick remover or fine-tipped tweezers. Pull slowly and steadily, close to the skin. Don’t twist or apply oils. Clean the area afterwards.

If, in the weeks after a bite, you notice a spreading rash or flu-like symptoms, seek medical advice and mention a possible tick bite.

A New Woodland

Loskin is a newly planted woodland, not a mature forest. While trees are establishing across the site, parts of Loskin currently feel open, with longer views than you might expect from a traditional woodland stay.

This is the early stage of the woodland’s life. You’ll see young trees, protective fencing and signs of active management rather than tall canopies and deep shade. The landscape will change significantly over time, but for now it reflects a woodland in the making.

That said, Loskin sits beside established woodland. Directly adjacent is an area of ancient Atlantic rainforest, and beyond that a much larger conifer forest with over 50 miles of forest tracks and trails for walking and cycling. While your cabin is part of a young woodland, mature forest is only moments away.

If you’re expecting to be immersed in an old forest the moment you step outside your door, Loskin may feel different. If you like the idea of staying at the edge of a variety of woodland types, and witnessing a new one taking shape then this is very much part of what Loskin offers.

Showers and Hot Water

As part of our commitment to minimise our use of fossil fuels we only use 100% renewable energy to power our cabins, and to not have excessive reserve capacity in case a lot of hot water is required. This has meant limiting the amount of hot water we can provide and we are currently testing different options in both cabins.

In short if you like long very hot showers we would recommend booking the Douglas Fir cabin.
